Kevin: Joining me is our guest this week, Jet Xavier, and we are talking about Jet’s Inaugural Study of Wellness and Wellbeing of the Australian Real Estate Industry. Some really very good insights as to how healthy we are mentally, and I guess in a way physically as well, because one of the things that came out of the study, one of the key findings, was that 23% of people have no time at all to pursue interests outside of real estate. 28% said they haven’t got time to develop any hobbies or interests. We need these things as distractions to help us overcome some of the stress in our industry, Jet, don’t we ?

Jet Xavier: Yeah, I mean, look, we weren’t born to work 24/7. That’s just not why we’re here on this planet. We live in a great place in Australia. We are here to have as much fun and enjoy as much of life as we can. What work does is sometimes it overrides that and takes the best of us, and leaves us with nothing left.

Kevin: Yeah. Well, on that point, yesterday you touched on how the industry needs to change, and where is that change going to come from? That leads us into the next theme that comes out of the study, which is act. Who is responsible for taking action to make sure this change does happen, Jet?

Jet Xavier: Well, when I started the project, there was no one obviously talking about it. There was no groups meeting that I was aware of. There was nothing being done at the national level, and so part of the theme that came out of the round tables last year was that there’s a collective responsibility to respond to the issues, but there hasn’t been a collective response. So part of Revive is to get people talking at the national level, at the state level, at the local level, talking through offices, individuals, think tanks. The REI is getting involved as well, running the Revive project, doing as much as we can with the new national survey that’s coming out soon as well, so we can get the people that can make the changes at those government levels as well to make a difference.

Jet Xavier: I mean, this is everybody’s responsibility, and so I think the more it’s talked about and shared, the more those in those positions can make these types of changes, can get involved and take responsibility.

Kevin: Well, you’re certainly helping to facilitate that by continuing with these study groups or round tables that you’re having. Anyone listening to the show who wants to support you in this or maybe help you drive it further, they can just simply contact you through your website, Jet?

Jet Xavier: Yeah, or just Facebook message me. It’s probably the quickest way, and just let me know what you’re thinking and, yeah, how you’d like to support it. We definitely need ambassadors on board that can help drive this initiative into the industry so that it sticks.

Jet, can I take you to the third theme, which is about adapt, and we’re talking here about the need to change. What needs to change? I think you say the re-enumeration model, low barriers to entry, establishing a career or how difficult it is, and the competitive nature of the industry. Are these the areas that you’ve highlighted that need change?

Jet Xavier: What we need to do is we need to look at what’s happening best practice in the global scope of things as far as Well-being and Wellness practices in workplaces. I think that’s the first place to start, and that’s how we can adapt. I mean, real estate is sometimes behind the eight ball a lot of the times when it comes to progressive innovative types of stuff. Sometimes we’re at the front, but within wellness and well-being, we are not applying best practice from global corporations and what they are doing. I think that’s where we need to adapt the most. We need to go, “What’s happening out there on the playing field globally and how can we take that and apply that to the real estate industry, and right down to the offices, right down to the individuals?” I think that’s the most important thing around the health and well-being of the people in the industry.

Kevin: Those four or five points that I mentioned just then about adapting and what needs to change, is there any one of those that’s more important than the other, or are they all fairly important to bring about this change?

Jet Xavier: I think they’re all important. I mean, we had this discussion this morning about the competitive nature of the industry. I mean, that’s not gonna change. It is a competitive industry, and that’s why people are drawn to it. I guess it’s the impact. How do we lessen the impact of it being too competitive so that it doesn’t stop us doing what we naturally want to do, and that’s obviously do the best we can in the field, create the best business that we can, but without the impact that happens. I think that’s important.
