I\u2019m pleased to announce that the NSW Government has started the process of appointing a Property Services Commissioner.<\/p>\n
Through our continual and ongoing engagement with professionals from across the property sector, we have heard loud and clear that the working relationship between the industry and the regulator needs to be improved.<\/p>\n
A first priority of the Commissioner will be to make recommendations to the Government on how we can improve and streamline services delivered by the regulator to agents, property service professionals, and consumers. The Commissioner will be responsible for advising and identifying ways to improve the interaction between Fair Trading and the sector.<\/p>\n
The Property Services Commissioner will sit independently of Fair Trading and will report directly to me.<\/p>\n
We are taking the same successful approach we did for the construction sector by appointing a Building Commissioner, and I\u2019m confident that we can achieve the same positive outcomes for the property industry.<\/p>\n
The property sector is a significant economic driver in NSW, employing over 37,000 people and contributing $100 billion to our economy. It\u2019s therefore critical that we have the right processes in place to allow the regulator to support this thriving industry whilst maintaining protections for consumers.<\/p>\n
When it comes to protecting our sellers, buyers, and renters, we\u2019ve taken several steps, including amending legislation, overhauling continual professional development requirements and establishing the Property Services Expert Panel, chaired by Chris Duggan.<\/p>\n
The new structure and industry engagement model represents a clear path towards improved collaboration and the whole sector benefit. We are pleased to have unanimous support for our plans from the Property Services Expert Panel and together with our new Commissioner, I look forward to driving positive change in the property sector.<\/p>\n
