It\u2019s the age-old question, isn\u2019t it?
\nWho is better at finances? Women or men?
\nOf course, each gender has their reasons why they believe they\u2019re better than the other.
\nFrom being more cautious with money to comparing phone plans to make sure they get the best deal, women and men generally do have different\u00a0attitudes to finance<\/a>.
\nSo rather than generalise about each gender\u2019s financial pros and cons, let\u2019s hear what they think directly.<\/p>\n

Why women are better than men at handling finances \u2013 according to Hanna Becker<\/h3>\n

1. Compared to men, women are more cautious with their money<\/strong>
\nWe tend to take less risks, therefore we won\u2019t make as many mistakes as men do and won\u2019t lose as much money as men do!
\n2. Women are less likely to take on large amounts of debt<\/strong>
\nAccording to a recent BMO poll, men are more likely to get into debt.
\nAbout 33 per cent of the male respondents had more than $100,000 in debt as opposed to only 22 per cent of the females. Need I say more?
\nFrank\u00a0\u2013 More likely to be necessary debt i.e. living expenses. In general, men assume that responsibility.<\/em>
\nHanna\u00a0\u2013 Why the need to assume?<\/em>
\n3. Men are overly optimistic<\/strong>
\nOptimism can be very good if it\u2019s based on facts, but is it just wishful thinking?
\nA positive attitude is key to investment success, but it must be grounded in reality.
\nFrank\u00a0\u2013 And sometimes reality just won\u2019t allow your dreams to take flight \u2013 ever been grounded at an airport?<\/em>
\nHanna\u00a0\u2013 True, but staying grounded can also help define us as women, and separate us from those with their heads in the clouds.<\/em>

\n4. The clich\u00e9 is true \u2013 women are not scared to ask for help<\/strong>
\nWomen are more likely to stop and ask for directions than men, right? Same goes for debt.
\nWomen are more likely to do whatever it takes to keep the household afloat than men.
\nAccording to a report by Fidelity, 53 per cent of women against 44 per cent of men were more likely to seek information and advice from\u00a0professional financial planners<\/a>.
\nFrank\u00a0\u2013 But is that after financial trouble hits?<\/em>
\nHanna\u00a0\u2013 Maybe because they are in control of their finances for the first time in years?
\n5. Women are better at goal-setting<\/strong>
\nWhen it comes to managing money, it\u2019s important to have specific, crucial and measurable goals. Without them, focus will be lost.
\nWhen was the last time you saw a man at the supermarket with a shopping list ensuring he didn\u2019t go over budget? Chances are the list was written by his wife or girlfriend!
\nFrank\u00a0\u2013 That\u2019s so old school \u2013 we\u2019re not talking about our parents era when the lines of responsibility were \u201chis\u201d and \u201chers!\u201d I\u2019d like to think we\u2019ve moved on from those dark old days!<\/em>
\nHanna\u00a0\u2013 Sad but true. No man can survive the supermarket experience and leave with just what is asked of him. It isn\u2019t in his DNA.<\/em>
\n6. Women live longer and this puts money in our pockets<\/strong>
\nWe are also less likely to smoke, abuse alcohol or take drugs.
\nWe are also less susceptible to diseases and generally lead much healthier lives than men.
\nHanna\u00a0\u2013 Now we just need to change the gender pay gap.<\/em><\/p>\n

Why men are better at finances than women \u2013 according to Frank Dalzotto<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"Serious1. Cost-effectiveness and practicality<\/strong>
\nWe make more cost-effective and practical purchases e.g. Bunnings vs. Boutique.
\nWhy spend a fortune on an expensive brand when a home brand will do the job?
\nHanna\u00a0\u2013 Practical may not be so cost-effective in the long-term. Ever heard the saying \u201cyou get what you paid for?\u201d<\/em>
\n2. Men hunt for the best deal<\/strong>
\nWhen it comes to utilities\/insurances\/phone and internet, we always compare deals and \u2018\u2019bang for buck\u2019\u2019 before committing and then follow up with a review every 12 to 24 months.
\n3. We\u2019re not big on shopping<\/strong>
\nWith clothing and accessories, we will exercise patience and shop around for a better deal rather than be lured by a visual \u201cwow\u201d factor.
\nThis is not limited to fashion, for example, purchasing a car should be about performance, comfort and price and not solely based on a \u201clet\u2019s get the red one\u201d criteria.
\n4. We are big on advance planning<\/strong>
\nWe plan our spending in advance, for example, when eating out, avoid ordering the entr\u00e9e, but if you do, make sure that agreement is mutual (although if you do care, it should lean slightly towards her choice).
\nWe might select a BYO establishment, but we don\u2019t want to buy the wine there as it\u2019s probably twice the price that Dan Murphy is selling it for, and again, make sure it\u2019s a wine of mutuality (that suits her palate).
\nIt\u2019s not always about price, it\u2019s about preserving the life of my children\u2019s father!
\nHanna\u00a0\u2013 So basically at the end of the day, it\u2019s probably a wise idea to leave the choices up to her. A woman knows what she wants anyway, right ladies?<\/em>
\n5. We are all about the \u201cBig Picture\u201d<\/strong>
\nThis means planning for a sizeable retirement nest egg is front of our minds.
\nWe look to the future and that means investing now for the years ahead, including life and income protection insurances.
\nWe want to make sure our families are provided for financially if we\u2019re seriously ill or we\u2019ve departed this mortal coil sooner than expected.
\n6. We love technology<\/strong>
\nTechnology allows us to download any one of hundreds of money-saving apps.
\nWhen we think we\u2019ve found something that will revolutionise the way we do things, we feel a little bit smarter than the next guy (it\u2019s a primeval competitive thing).
\nAnd as history shows, men are the more hands-on gender, we prefer to let our fingers do the negotiating.
\nThere is a reason why that book \u201cMen are from Mars, Women are from Venus\u201d was so successful.
\nThat\u2019s because women and men are fundamentally different in many ways.
\nBut when it comes to finances, it doesn\u2019t matter who is \u201cbetter\u201d.
\nWhat really matters is that both women and men work together towards a common\u00a0investment goal<\/a>, with each using their specific skill-set to their mutual advantage.
\nUsing that strategy will help to create a harmonious financial future \u2013 not one where you\u2019re single and broke because one person thought they were \u201cbetter\u201d than the other.
